The System - Lesson 5

The exercises
How you practice determines what you are going to play when you solo. If you practice licks and that's all you do, you'll be playing licks when you solo. If you, on the other hand, practice sequences that function as the basis of melodies (And licks) you'll have a tool that you can use to create your own "licks" on the spot. The exercises under each of the five shapes are designed specifically to give you a fundamental tool that you can use to create great improvised lines.

Also, the better you become at these exercises the easier it becomes to play fast runs that sound like the mode your playing. Every new sequence you learn trains your fingers to move in a new way. So the more sequences you learn, the more diverse melodies and solos you can create.
